Pool Time!

While Shaun has to work all week, the girls and I did some hanging out at the hotel and visiting with some of my friends. Today was a lazy breakfast, tidying up our hotel room and a late morning into afternoon swim. The fishies just had to have more time in the water! Because it was a weekday, the hotel pool was empty and the girls and I had the whole place to ourselves. A nice lady from Texas swam with us for a bit and played with the girls but for the most part, it was empty pool bliss!

Our little water babies!
Abby found a pool noodle that someone left behind. Score!

Father’s Day, Heat Waves and Evening Fun

The day after the reunion was Fathers Day! In the end the day wasn’t too busy or crazy, but thats because the long anticipated heatwave was moving in and it was hot! The mercury hit 110 in the San Fernando Valley ad it was not fun.

In the early afternoon we met with my parents and sister as well as Grantie Fran at Pizza Cookery for lunch. Not only did we get to see Fran but we had the chance to eat at one of our favorite places. Boy, do I miss their salad and ranch dressing. Yummy! Lunch was a great time catching up. My parents and sister have not seen Fran since we moved away, so I know they enjoyed the time spent with her.

After lunch we tried to take a drive around the valley but after about 30 minutes it was becoming very apparent that it was too hot, even for our cars AC. So we headed back to the hotel room and took naps and hung out until it cooled off and we could go over to visit Grandpa and Uncle James.

Dancing, singing and posing.

Relaxing… and if I remember correctly, someone tooted too. I wonder who?

The evening at Grandpa Pats was pretty relaxed and fun. The girls had the chance to run around in the backyard and play with Nonnie, as well has hang out with Uncle James. They picked apples off of Grandpa’s apple tree and attempted to ride tricycles that are now way too small for them. It was great to slow down and visit. I think we were all in need of some relaxation. Unfortunately we couldn’t stay late because Shaun had to work down in Santa Monica the next day, but we’d be back soon!

Taylor Family Reunion

Our trip to California was a trip that would serve several purposes. One was for Shaun to come down to LA and work with his team at the offices in Santa Monica for a week.  Another was to attend our Taylor Family Reunion (my fathers side of the family) and see family that we haven’t connected with since the passing of my grandmother back in 2012. Unfortunately not everyone could make it to the first reunion, but I am sure there will be more!

The reunion was held up at Rincon State Beach in Ventura County and the day couldn’t have been more perfect. A pending heat wave threatened to make the day too hot, but it wasn’t. It was perfect. The beach was busy but not swamped and there was plenty of space to walk, play and enjoy a beautiful Southern California day.

We spent the day talking and catching up with everyone. Abby and Ellie had the chance to meet their cousin Bella who is their age and they hit it off right away. We listened to music, ate amazing food (courtesy of my cousin Joseph and his excellent BBQ skills) and welcomed some new members of the family (spouses and girlfriends).

Jillian… always ready with a pose.
The day comes to a close and we start saying our goodbyes! Until next time Taylor Family!
Perfect sunsets for a perfect end to that day.

When the day came to an end it was hard to say goodbye to everyone. But we will see one another soon! All I know is that our first family reunion was a big success and grandma and grandpa would have been so very proud of their family. They may not have been there in body but they were there in spirit and I know they were both smiling down on us today.

California Will Always Be Home…

While you can never say one place will always be home, because we cant predict our futures or where the wind will blow us next, I firmly believe that you leave always leave a piece of your heart in the places that leave big impressions and hold wonderful memories. Driving the coast today, I can see why those who fall in love with California never want to leave and when they do, they always make it a point to come back whenever they can. They say “Home is Where the Heart Is” and I know that a piece of my heart will always stay here and no matter what it will always be home.

‘Tis The Season

And so it begins my friends… Fire Season in Southern California. Luckily this one was out within an hour or so, but that was probably due to the fact that this area burned heavily 2 years ago. I remember it very well as I was home recovering from my C-Section with Abby and Simi Valley was dark with smoke, my Aunt, Uncle and Grandmother had to take a detour to come visit, Grandma Zoe had to evacuate from her house, and Shaun nearly got stuck in Box Canyon because it was so smokey.

Anyway, I digress. This fire was in the hills behind Porter Ranch at the top of Tampa Avenue. We spotted it on our way home from Thousand Oaks off of the 118 on Monday. As I watched, I think my only real concern was that it was close to a Gas Company facility. Now I am generally not a looky-loo, but Abby was having a grand old time watching the fire trucks wiz by. So, we headed over to the park near Grandma Zoe’s house and sure enough, all of the fire department helicopters were landing there to fill up for water drops. Its pretty amazing to watch. One would land, fire fighters would run a hose from a nearby hydrant to it, fill up and it would take off. The cool part is that it only took minutes to do. Abby just loved to watch them. I think should have cared less about what they were doing. All she knew was that they were there and it was pretty neat.

I am beginning to think that those of us living in Southern California are getting a little too used to fires. Within minutes of us parking to watch, the street was swarming with people, with their cameras poised, ready to take pictures. I can say I was one of them, although I did use my cell phone to snap a few photos. After living through so many of them in the last ten to fifteen years, I know I am in awe of them. I am always respectful of the fact that they can cause so much devastation and heartbreak for many. At the same time, its amazing to see what fire can do and how, all too often, we have no control over it. I have a respect for fire and a very healthy fear of it too. I think if everyone was that way, so many of the major brush fires of the last ten years could have been avoided.

California Drivers….

Is it me or are the drivers here getting worse?! Ever since the handsfree law was passed here in California I have noticed that the driving has become worse then before. Did we all lose IQ points the minute they made us take our cell phones away from our head?! Or is that all the hands-free devices have made us complacent and give us a false sense of safety on the road?

I think I am going to have to go with the latter of the two. Since that law was passed I have had more close calls then ever. I am not saying I am a perfect driver but good grief! In the last week I have seen people make unprotected left hand turns from the far right hand lane across 4 lanes of traffic, U-Turns where it seems as though one wouldn’t even be possible, slamming onto the breaks and stopping in the middle of the road for no reason whatsoever (there is literally nothing there… no animals or children running out into the road, no cars ahead of them… NOTHING), waiting until you are no more then 20 feet away to finally decide to pull out of a driveway of a shopping center onto a busy street as they look directly at you and stopping and parking the car in the middle of the road… the list goes on.

Now that I have the girls I think I notice these things more then I did before, but it still scares the snot out of me. I hate driving places especially here in the valley. I will literally go out of my way to avoid certain areas or even making an unprotected left hand turn on some streets. Gotta love driving in California!

Saturday Drive

Yesterday Shaun and I wanted to take advantage of the beautiful day and decided to go for a drive. Instead of our usual drive up the coast, we decided to do something different and head up to Big Bear. It was cloudy and gloomy as we hit San Bernadino, but as we started to head up the mountain things began to clear. Before we knew it, this was what we saw…

The day was cool and crisp and so relaxing. As we started to climb in elevation, relaxation set in and Abby passed out for a little cat nap. She woke up just as we started to head into Big Bear and well… was a tad out of it. She still looks cute though!

As Abby woke up, Shaun decided to show me a family favorite, the Grizzly Manor. He went there often as a kid and the Wharton family still goes when they are up there. If I remember correctly Auntie Brittany just went not too long ago with friends! After we stopped for a picture, we continued on our way and drove around the lake and started to make our way back home. Abby was just a tad cranky but some string cheese seemed to due the trick. Just don’t bother her while she is eating!

Before actually heading home, we wanted to stop and find a spot where Abby could play in the snow. We stopped at a small trail head and got Abby out of the car ready to play. She was a little wary about the white stuff, at first, but she adjusted quickly. After picking up and thrwing some snow and maiking her first attempts at walking in it, Abby soon found that playing with the dirt all around us was even more fun then the snow. Before I could do anything, she was picking up handfuls and throwing them around. Most of the time though she just let it slide out of her hand as though she was testing the direction of the wind. After some good play time, it as time to pack up and go. Abby wasn’t too filthy, but a bath was definitely on the agenda when we got home!

The drive home was beautiful! Low clouds began to come in and made for a beautiful yet eerie sunset. I loved it and so did Abby. She seemed to love everything and it kept her awake and chatting the whole trip home. Yup, from Big Bear to the San Fernando Valley, sans the last 15 minutes of the drive, Abby chattered, laughed and acted like a little goofball! Mommy and daddy were tired just listening to her. All in all, it was a wonderful Saturday and a great drive! Nothing better then spending some quality time with my two favorite people!

Station Fire

Oh fire season… it has begun and I really have to say that I don’t miss it each year. The Station Fire is getting bigger and bigger by the minute and it has been very scary. Thank goodness for all of those wonderful firefighters out there. They do an amazing job and risk so much.

I took this picture on our way to Disneyland for the evening. You will get to hear more about that later! But this was from the Reseda on ramp to the 118. Pretty impressive but scary. I don’t think this is a sight I will ever get used to. What was even worse about it is that we could see the flames from this fire from the parking structure at Disneyland! Not good.

Continued Thoughts and Prayers

The fires still burn but it seems the weather is making its change from very dry, windy and hot to cool with humidity in the air. The Monecito fire is under containment and even though it takes weeks to put fires like these out completely, it no longer poses a threat. The fire out in Sylmar continues on but with 30% containment and the fires out in Orange County still rage but 15% containment is better then nothing.

The police department began its search today with its K-9 unit in the mobile home park where over 500 homes were burnt to the ground. It was feared that some residents of the mobile home community may have perished in the fires, but today’s search came up with nothing. Our prayers are being answered and I hope the continued days of searching come up with nothing as well. It would be such a bright spot in all of this destruction to have not a single fatality to speak of. We continue to pray and hope that this is the case.

Its disheartening to think, however, that all of these fires over the last few days are under investigation as being intentionally set. What in the world causes a person to start a fire that could take so much from so many people and displace thousands of others temporarily?? I am a smart person and know the realistic answer to this, but its scary to think there are people out there like this. A man was arrested today for attempting to set a fire near Malibu Creek State Park, which had that fire spread it would have destroyed hundreds of homes and potentially harmed a lot of families out camping in the warm Southern California weather. It is entirely possible that this man is responsible for one if not all of the fires set over the last week.

I hope everyone sends their thoughts and prayers to the firefighters who have gone days without sleep, rest, and seeing their families to protect so many and to those people who have lost their homes or have been evacuated. Many of those firefighters who work so hard to fight these fires, have lost their homes as well. If you can, even if its only a dollar or a bag of t-shirts, please donate to the Red Cross and other foundations that will help many get back on their feet again.

Hopefully tomorrow will bring even better weather and give everyone a bit of a break and some peace of mind.

Thoughts and Prayers

I am sure many people across our great nation have their eyes fixed on Southern California and the devastation that it we have seen over the past 3 days. Every year we seem to have brush fire after brush fire but never have I seen so much damage and destruction. The fires in Montecito (near Santa Barbara) have destroyed plenty of acres of land, but more importantly have claimed more then 100 homes. The fires in Sylmar claimed more then 500 mobile homes in just one mobile home park and over 165 homes. The fires in Orange County (Yorba Linda, Corona, Anaheim Hills, Chino Hills, etc.) have claimed homes as well. Never in my life have I seen so much destroyed in such a small amount of time by fire.

It hurts so much to think of what so many have lost, their homes, their livelihoods and all of their irreplaceable precious memories. I know that a home just holds stuff, but its amazing what stuff can mean, especially the smallest and most trivial things. My heart goes out to those who have lost everything in an instant. My thoughts and prayers are with them and their families as they begin the journey of healing and picking up the pieces of what they have lost. I wish them strength and courage and the hope that each day brings new beginnings.

I also pray that with all the devastation and destruction lives have not been lost as many fear. I hope that everyone was able to leave their home safely, even if it was with heavy hearts. My thoughts are also with the brave men and women that work for our fire, police and medical response units from many counties around Southern California. I hope they stay safe as they work to protect homes and put out these destructive fires and help those who have been injured.

I can only hope that the morning brings better news for many.

Fire Update #1

The fires continue on but the winds seem to be letting up and allowing some containment. Zoe is now back at home and the mandatory evacuation for Porter Ranch has been lifted. Unfortunately the fire grew larger than expected and many homes have been destroyed. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families that have lost their homes and to the families of our hard working firefighters. They have all worked so hard to keep everyone safe and to stop what could be an even bigger disaster.

Shaun and I have kept a watchful eye out, as the fire and several hot spots are making their way into Simi Valley. Our apartment is up against the hills, but it looks as though the fire is still a distance away and should not pose a threat. I guess only time will tell and hopefully the winds tonight will give our wonderful firefighters some time to regroup and rest. We will keep everyone posted!

October in Los Angeles

Well its definitely October in Los Angeles! I guess this is a welcome back reminder for Shaun and myself! The Santa Ana winds kicked up and like clockwork, the hills are now on fire. Unfortunatly the fires were a little too close to home, for both Shaun and I and even more so for Zoe. The fire started up by Porter Ranch in the hills above Zoe’s neighborhood. Around 1pm, the community was under mandatory evecuation, which has left her at a friends house for what is hopefully just for tonight. Jack, who was staying at Grandma Zoe’s until I fully recovered from the C-Section, is now at home with us and learning to live with a new little creature in the house. As you can see from the pictures, the fire was pretty darn big and created a lot of havoc for a lot of people. People were forced from their homes, the 118, 210 and several other freeways are still shut down and I know everyones allergies are raging. Hopefully it will be contained soon and Zoe can return to her home, safe and sound. We shall see what tomorrow brings.
